Edge acquires Cannes titles El Angel and Another Day of Life

Edge Entertainment proudly presents the acquisition of two acclaimed titles from the Cannes Film Festival; Un Certain Regard title EL ANGEL and the out-of-competition entry ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE, based on the life and experiences of legendary journalist Ryszard Kapuściński. At Cannes Edge also picked up multiple award-winner Sweet Country. 

EL ANGEL (2018, Argentina, Spain) is the incredible true story of the longest-serving prisoner ever in the history of Argentina, nicknamed The Angel of Death, a teenage killer as merciless as he was beautiful. Set in Buenos Aires in the 1970s, the film centers on Carlitos; a seventeen-year-old youth with movie star swagger, blond curls and a baby face. As an adolescent Carlitos starts to steal, eventually becoming a skilled thief.  Killing is just a random offshoot of the violence, which continues to escalate until Carlitos is finally apprehended. Because of his angelic appearance, the press dubs Carlitos “The Angel of Death.” Showered with attention because of his beauty, he becomes an overnight celebrity. 

The film is another collaboration between Top Argentinian producer K&S Films and Pedro Almodovar’s EL DESEO after Wild Tales and The Clan. The film will premiere in Argentina on August 9th 2018 through 20th Century Fox. Edge has acquired the film for Scandinavia, Iceland and the Baltics. TRAILER

Another Day of Life (Poland, Spain, German, Belgium, Hungary 2018) was presented out of competition as an official selection of the Cannes Film Festiva. Set in Angola in the 1970s it follows the journalist Ryszard Kapuściński as he navigates the ever-shifting lines of conflict in the Angolan war. With stunning visuals and an incredible true story, it is an unforgettable cinematic experience. Edge acquired the film from Indie Sales for the Scandinavia, Iceland and the Baltics states. TRAILER

Edge also picked up the praised and award-winning western Sweet Country (Australia, 2017) from Memento for Sweden, Finland, Iceland and the Baltic States. Edge acquires multiple award winners from Berlin and Sundance

Edge Entertainment proudly presents the acquisition of four titles from the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin, including award winners from both Berlin and Sundance: The Heiresses, Butterflies, Studio 54 and Mademoiselle Paradis.

The Heiresses was presented with two Silver Bears at the Berlin Film Festival, the Best Actress and Alfred Bauer-prize for films that offer a new perspective, and the FIPRESCI Award for best film. The drama is centered on a middle-aged woman who has to learn to live on her own after her long-time partner is sent to prison for financial fraud. Edge acquired the film from Luxbox of the Nordic and Baltic states.

Butterflies won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Dramatic Competition at Sundance International Film Festival as well as the FIPRESCI-prize for Best Film. The film takes place in Hasanlar; a small town in Turkey, where three siblings are reunited and confronted with their common growing memories. Rights for the Nordic and Baltic countries have been acquired from Films Boutique.

Studio 54 was one of the most acclaimed documentaries at the Sundance film festival. Centered on the legendary night-club, the film tells the story of its rise and fall and all the glitz and glamour that surrounded it. Edge acquired the film for the Nordic and Baltic states from Dogwoof.

Mademoiselle Paradis is one of last year’s festival favorites, having played Toronto, San Sebastian and the London Film Festival. Set turn-of-the-19th-century Vienna, it tells the true story of Maria Theresia von Paradis, a talented, blind pianist. She is sent to an experimental doctor in order to help her regain her sight, but it might just impact her piano talents. Edge has acquired the rights for the film for Sweden and Iceland from Playtime.

Edge signs Cannes buzz title The Villainess

Edge Entertainment is proud to present the high profile acquisition of this year’s Cannes Midnight success entry The Villainess. Additionally, Edge Entertainment has picked up the Australian success Red Dog: True Blue. 

The Villainess by Jung Byung-gil had its world premiere in the Cannes Official Midnight Selection; where Edge’s previous acquisition Train to Busan world premiered in 2016.  Byung-gil’s The Villainess is a captivating revenge thriller, which premieres throughout Asia in June followed by the USA and then worldwide. Edge Entertainment has acquired all rights throughout Scandinavia, Iceland and the Baltics from Contents Panda.

The Villainess is about Sook-hee, a trained assassin for the National Intelligence Service. After refusing a confidential mission she assumes a new identity. She meets a man and falls in love. However, on the day of their wedding, she is assigned a new mission that changes everything. Ultimately, she must seek revenge on the men who murdered her husband. 

Red Dog: True Blue is Kriv Stender's prequel to his own Red Dog from 2011. Like its predecessor True Blue has been an major success in Australia. Red Dog: True Blue premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to screen in Berlin. Edge Entertainment has acquired all rights throughout Scandinavia, Iceland and the Baltics from Myriad Entertainment. 

Red Dog: True Blue is a story about Mick who lives with his grandfather on an Australian farm. He finds a puppy drenched in blue paint, and names him ‘Blue’. From this moment, the two of them are inseparable. But when Mick falls in love for the first time, things become turbulent for both.

As announced earlier, Edge also acquired one of Cannes best selling titles; Francois Ozon's L'Amanat Double from Films Distribution.

Edge brings home Amant Double

Edge Entertainment is proud to present the high profile acquisition of Amant Double by François Ozon.

Amant Double by François Ozon is competing for the Palme d'Or and is one of this festival’s most sought after titles. The film has its official premiere in Cannes on Friday May 26th and has a chance to be awarded the Palme d'Or at the Awards Ceremony on May 28th. Edge Entertainment has bought the distribution rights in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, and the pay TV rights for Denmark, from Films Distribution.

Amant Double is an erotic thriller about the young woman Chloé who falls in love with her psychoanalyst, Paul. A few months later she moves in with him, but soon discovers that her lover is concealing a part of his identity.

Edge brings home ‘A Fantastic Woman’ from Berlin

As the European Film Market (EFM) winds down, Edge Entertainment proudly presents the acquisition of highly praised Berlin competition entry A Fantastic Woman by Sebastián Leilo. Edge has also secured the rights to Pablo Larrain’s Neruda and A Woman’s Life by Stéphane Brizé.

A Fantastic Woman world premiered in Berlin to great acclaim and has been one of the most talked-about films during the festival. It centers on the life of Marina, coping with the loss of her partner Orlando. The film is directed by Sebastián Leilo (Gloria) and produced by Pablo Larrain (Jackie) and participated in the main competition section at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film was among the best selling titles during EFM and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for USA, Canada, Australia and New Zeeland.

Neruda is the latest film by director Pablo Larraín and premiered in Cannes. The film follows the Chilean senator and poet Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) who in 1948 is forced into hiding after criticizing the Chilean government for betraying the Communist Party. Neruda won the Best Picture Award at the Fenix Ibero- American Film Awards and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in January 2017. It has also received four awards at the Chilean Film Awards, including Best Film, and is the Chilean entry for the Academy Awards.

A Woman’s Life, directed by Stéphane Brizé (Measure of a Man), is an adaptation of Guy De Maupassant’s classic novel about young Jeanne’s (Judith Chemla) marriage to her unfaithful husband (Jean-Pierre Darroussin). A Woman’s Life premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it received the FIPRESCI Award for best film. The film also received the Louis Delluc-Prize, awarded to the best French feature, and is nominated for two César Awards, including Best Actress (Chemla).

Edge Entertainment acquired A Fantastic Woman from Funny Balloons and holds the rights for Scandinavia, Iceland and the Baltics. It is expected to premiere in the region 2017/2018. Neruda was also acquired from Funny Balloons and Edge holds the rights for Sweden and Iceland as well as Scandinavian Pay TV rights. A Woman’s Life was acquired for Scandinavia, Iceland and the Baltics from MK2. Both films are expected to premiere in the region in the fall of 2017.

Edge signs acclaimed ‘Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe”

Edge Entertainment proudly presents the acquisition of Maria Schrader’s critically acclaimed Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe. The Film World Premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, and will receive its release in 2017. 

Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe follows the years in exile in the life of Stefan Zweig, one of the most read German-language writers of his time. Having to escape the Nazi regime in his homeland Austria, Zweig travels between Buenos Aires, New York and Brazil. As a Jewish intellectual, Zweig struggles to find the right stance towards the events in Nazi Germany, while searching for a home in the new world.

The latest film from director Maria Schrader stars Josef Hader and Barbara Sukowa. The film received much acclaim on its premiere in Germany and has been chosen as Austria’s official selection for the Academy Awards.

Stefan Zweig was one of Europe’s most widely read authors during the 1930’s. His work has gained renewed interest in recent years, including the re-release of many of his novels and his landmark memoirs World of Yesterday.

Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe is distributed by Edge Entertainment. Edge acquired the title for the Nordic market (Excluding Denmark, aside for the Pay- TV rights) and the Baltics. The film is expected to premiere in the region in 2017. 

François Ozon to receive Stockholm Film Festival's Visionary Award

Acclaimed director François Ozon will receive the Stockholm Film Festival's Visionary Award this November. The award, which previously has been awarded to such luminaries as Yorgos Lanthimos, Roy Anderson, Todd Solondz, Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky and Wes Anderson. 

Ozon will screen his latest film, the much acclaimed Frantz, which is distributed in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Iceland and the Baltics through Edge Entertainment.

Edge signs Ozon’s highly acclaimed Frantz

Edge Entertainment proudly presents a new high profile acquisition, Frantz. Directed by François Ozon, the film received critical acclaim at the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and will be released across Scandinavia in 2017.

In a small German town after World War I, Anna mourns daily at the grave of her fiancé Frantz, killed in battle in France. One day a young Frenchman, Adrien, also lays flowers at the grave. His presence so soon after the German defeat ignites both tensions and passions.

Frantz is the latest film by French director François Ozon (In the House, Eight Women, Potiche). The film premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival where actress Paula Beer also won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Newcomer for her role as the grieving Anna. It was also screened to much acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Frantz is acquired from Films Distribution for Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Edge also acquired the Danish Pay TV rights for the film. Frantz will be released in 2017.

EDGE ACQUIRES TRAIN TO BUSAN

The passengers of the express train between Seoul and Busan discover that they are stuck in the train in the middle of a zombie outbreak. Chaos and confusion rule both outside and within the train, but a gang of survivors band together to escape the clutches of the bloodthirsty Zombies and to escape infection themselves. 

Train to Busan world premiered as an Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival where it became one of the festival's biggest surprises. The film has become one of the year's most successful films in Korea with over ten million admissions. Directed by acclaimed animation director Sang-ho Yeon (Seoul Station, King of Pigs), Train to Busan has both Sony and Fox battling it out for the remake rights.
