Fahrije’s husband has been missing since the war in Kosovo, and along with their grief, her family struggles to make ends meet. In order to provide for them she embarks on a business venture selling homemade ajvar, but in the traditional patriarchal village where she lives, her ambition and efforts to empower herself and other women are not seen as positive things. She struggles not only to keep her family afloat but also against a hostile community who is rooting for her to fail.

Writer/director Blerta Basholli’s audacious debut is layered with honesty, authenticity and true grit. Based on a real story, Hive is an uplifting gem about ingenuity and ambition challenging age-old belief systems and which proves nothing can stop women on a mission. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews where it won 3 awards including Grand Jury Prize, Best Director and the Audience Award.
