Freaks out
Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio and Mario form a family in the circus where they work as ‘freaks’ in 1943 Nazi-occupied Italy. Israel, the owner and putative father, disappears in an attempt to find an escape route overseas for them all. The four friends are in disarray. Without anyone looking after them but, above all, without the circus, they lose their womb and feel lost as rudderless sideshow attractions in a city at war. Instead they are approached by the mysterious Franz from a German circus who is very keen to hire the group as his latest attraction.
Freaks Out is a spectacular historical drama directed by Gabriele Mainetti (They Call me Jeeg, 2015) and had its world premiere in the competition at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. Surreal images, creative storytelling, and outstanding performances from Franz Rogowski, Aurora Giovinazzo and Pietro Castellitto come together in this prize awarded big budget production, signaling the birth of a new genre in Italian Cinema. It had its major release in Italy on October 28th, 2021.
