The Hill Where Lionesses Roar (EN)

THE HILL WHERE LIONESSES ROAR

Somewhere in Kosovo, in a small remote village, three young women, outgoing Li, reserved Jeta, and apparent leader Qe see their dreams and ambitions stifled. In their quest for independence, nothing can stop them: time to let the lionesses roar.

Self-taught director Luána Bajrami acquired experience as an actress with different filmmakers, while writing, editing and directing. In 2019, only 18 years old, she starred in Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, was nominated for Most Promising Actress at the César Awards, directed her first short film In Summer Rippen Berries and her first feature film The Hill Where Lionesses Roar. Strong of a double French-Kosovar culture, she mainly deals with the condition of youth through a rather universal prism. Her next feature film is currently in development.

Luana Bajrami’s assured, lush-looking directorial debut paints a plaintive portrait of three teenage girls kicking against their suffocating existence in a backwater of Kosovo.
— Screendaily
It’s incredibly relatable, and makes for a unique backdrop for an age-old story.
