Red Army

Werner Herzog and Jerry Weintraub produce and present a side of the Cold War never before explored in this documentary about the most successful dynasty in sports history: the Red Army hockey team. Told from the perspective of Red Army captain Slava Fetisov, the film portrays his transformation from national hero to political enemy and the transformation from the USSR to Russia. With great insight the film humanizes the people behind a team designed as an instrument of Soviet propaganda and shows the personal toll the oppressive training took on the players themselves.

A vivid portrait of the cold war relations between the USA and USSR – where much of the actual conflict was fought on the ice rink – Red Army will appeal to anyone interested in hockey, cultural and political history alike. The film world premiered as an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival and will screen at both Telluride and Toronto. Sony distributes the film in the USA, Canada, Central Europe and Asia.
