Between two worLds

Marianne Winckler (Juliette Binoche), a well-known author, goes to live in northern France to research for her new book on the subject of job insecurity. Without revealing her true identity, she gets hired as a cleaner, working with a group of other women. In this new role, she experiences financial instability and social invisibility first-hand. But she also discovers mutual assistance and solidarity, strong bonds shared by these be- hind-the-scenes working women.

Director Emmanuel Carrére is a well-known French writer of many prize-winning novels, essays and screenplays. His novels Class Trip and The Adversary were respectively made into films by Claude Miller and Nicole Garcia. Between Two Worlds is his second feaure film and a loose adaptation of Florence Aubenas’s Le Quai de Ouistreham. The film was the opening film at this year’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. Edge Entertainment has acquired the rights for the Nordic countries from France TV.

The impish, mischievous air of Juliette Binoche is one of the qualities which mark her as one of the most vivid and interesting actresses working today.

Certainly, Between Two Worlds ticks plenty of social realist boxes. But there’s a satisfying added depth born out of the persuasively fleshed out performances and the focus on female friendship.
