A Chiara (EN)

A CHiara

The Guerrasio family and their friends gather to celebrate Claudio and Carmela’s oldest daughter’s 18th birthday. There is a healthy rivalry between the birthday girl and her 16-year-old sister Chiara, as they compete on the dancefloor. It is a happy occasion, and the close-knit family is in top form. However, everything changes the next day when Clau- dio disappears. Chiara starts to investigate; as she gets closer to the truth, she is forced to decide what kind of future she wants for herself.

Director Jonas Carpignano’s first feature film, Mediterranea, was selected in Cannes in 2015 (Critics’ Week). His second feature, A Ciambra, premiered in 2017 at the Directors’ Fortnight. With A Chiara, he is back in Cannes and brings the trilogy to an end in the Calabrian town of Gioia Tauro, Italy, where his three feature films were shot. Much like his second feature, A Chiara won the Europa Cinemas Label award for best European Film.

Jonas Carpignano’s most accomplished, polished and affecting film to date though it still maintains enough grittiness and rough edges to fit the material.

A Chiara will likely expand the director’s visibility and send people back to watching his earlier features
